What's the problem
Thursday, Jul. 10, 2003 - 9:47 a.m.

So he asked the man if he would share some of his food wirh the others.

The man looked at his questioner from behind eyes that had seen hunger in the midst of plenty.

His first thoughts were of the old proverb : give a man a fish feed him for a day, teach a man to fish feed him for his life.

The man then did something very strange. He pulled out a gun and shot those in front of him who hungered.

Later that day, a detective asked the man why he had shot the hungry people.

All the man could say was that he had solved their hunger problems for the rest of their lives. Though his logic was correct, there were obvious flaws with his decision to shoot...

When questioned further about the shootings, the man went on to explain by using a different example...

He stated that if a man was to jump out of an airplane, only to discover that he had no parachute, he would be falling for the rest of his life.

The detective was obviously trying to find solutions to problems at hand.

The man pointed out to him that it may be a better use of his time defining the answer, and then discover what the problem might be. The detective pondered this statement for hours after he went home that night.

Finally it became clear to him what the problem was. Already having the solution in hand, he went back to the jail gave the man a gun and the two of them shot every officer in the station.

So that was his solution...

What's the problem?
